Our fantastic host Marianne provided some suggestions of things to do in Old Town;
– Arabic library
– Grand-masters Palace
– Knights road
– Archaeological Museum
– Three windmills
– Old Town history museum
– Colossus of Rhodes site
– Moat Walk / Wall Walk
So we set off, we went first to the Grandmasters Palace, which was awesome. Alot of culture was saved from the different locations around Greece and brought here to this palace for preservation. Along with this was some great history about the knights templars.
Well worth the look in but it could have done with more information about each of the different rooms.
Next we went down the knights road, not too “WOW!” but was a good walk with alot of historical architecture to view.
Next we stopped in at the archaeological museum, now this museum was all about vases, pots and more vases. There was rooms ontop of rooms with different vases and pots that had been recovered, reconstructed, repainted, restored. Seriously after the fourth room I was not interested in pots anymore.
We did get a chance to see a statue that was recovered from the bottom of the ocean of Aphrodite which was pretty cool. I would not rate this one too high on the list of things to do.
Three windmills stand on the port leading out to the site of one of the now missing feet for the colossus. Only one of the windmills still has its sails but still pretty cool all the same.
Colossus of Rhodes site was a little underwealming, there are two pillars there now with just deer ontop of them. There was a replacement colossus of Rhodes however which as a Greek fellow wearing a blue shirt having an argument with a boater who wanted to dock in the private marina. The replacement colossus won.
We then went off in search of another museum that Marianne had mentioned however it appeared to be closed down sometime ago.
At this point we had spent most of the day walking around old town so we decided to head back to freshen up before going out to dinner.
Marianne suggested a little place called Yiannis.
We eventually found it after some searching earlier in the day making sure that we didn’t get lost again. Marianne suggested that we request a seat in the rear as not to be bothered by the foot traffic as it was close to one of the main tourist streets. We did and we given the back of the restaurant to ourselves for the majority of the meal.
We had another awesome round of tzaziki followed by moussaka and sovlaki. In addition to this we were given an “on the house” pasta which was awesome.
